The in motion Olympic Push Up/Sit Up Challenge

What:  The Olympic Push-Up/Sit-Up Challenge is a fantastic way for schools to be in motion, celebrate the Olympics, and compete like Olympians! Last year, St. John School challenged schools to compete in a push up/sit up challenge. The contest was a huge success with thousands of push-ups/sit-ups completed in our region! In this Olympic year, the challenge is on again and gold, silver and bronze medals are on the line!

When:
During the Olympics: You can decide which 5 days of the Olympics you would like to hold your competition. The 5 days can be anytime between February 12 and February 26th, 2010.

Who: All students in Grades 2-8. This year, there are 17 schools across Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph registered to compete!

Why: Physical activity levels of children and youth are an ongoing concern, not only at a National, but her in Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph. 91% of Canadian children are not active enough for healthy growth and development. In Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph, 43% of children aged 5 – 12 years do not accumulate enough moderate to vigorous physical activity. The in motion Olympic Push Up/Sit Up Challenge will encourage children and youth to become physically active and provide an opportunity to celebrate the Olympics and promote team work, and school spirit!

How: Teachers record the number of push-ups and sit-ups performed by their students during the week of the competition. All push-ups and sit-ups must be witnessed and tallied by a teacher. The school finds their total and divides by the number of students they have in the participating grades. An average push-up/sit-up per capita will be used to compare numbers between schools.

Winners: The school with the highest average will be awarded the in motion Push Up/Sit Up Challenge Plaque, the Olympic Push Up/Sit Up Challenge Gold Medal and two hours of free ice time at a local arena. The schools with the second and third highest averages will be awarded silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Congratulations!

Schools registered for the in motion Olympic Push Up/Sit Up Challenge were entered into a draw for a “coaches conference” for teachers. Congratulations to the winners of the draw, St. Paul’s Catholic School and Credit Meadows Public School!
